Provided SteamOS can replace the Windows gaming use-case. In addition, the Deck will further contribute to SteamOS maturity so for those not wanting to give up their $2000 rigs, folks could use SteamOS on their rigs for some performance gains (hopefully). The Deck is very aggressively priced for the hardware offered. It'll cost roughly the same or less compared to an equal Rig using an AMD Ryzen 5300G, 16GB RAM, mainboard, psu, storage, case, (and if needed - monitor, controller). Plus given it's price point, it will help avoid the need for building a moderate PC Rig from scratch in this Covid impacted chip shortage. To me, It will looks like a it should be a smashing success for %70 - %85 for most PC gamers wanting a vertical/portable dockable console with streaming media & laptop/desktop like features.

If you want more portable storage via USB, a high-speed USB stick may be an acceptable compromise due to it comparatively lower power draw. Any device on its *single* USB port will drain the battery faster - considering SSD & NVMe have higher draw than a controller or lower power peripheral. You'll likely half the battery potential if there's not a power pass-through. Something else to consider is the power draw. Putting aside the thermal considerations for a moment a storage shield would have to accommodate.
